Kentucky Driver Point System

Most of the time, drivers are safe and courteous. But, not everyone follows the rules, and these people often cause accidents that result in serious accidents. And, our state has a system to follow these negligent drivers, called the Kentucky Driver Point System.

The Kentucky Driver Point System is used to identify people who are habitually negligent with their driving. If a driver accumulates 12 points within two years, the driver can have their license suspended. If the driver is under 18, the accumulated points are 7 within 2 years.

Upon the accumulation of 12 or 7 points, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet conducts a hearing with the negligent driver. If a person does not appear for the hearing, they will automatically have a driving suspension for 6 months, with a longer suspension if this is not the driver's first offense.

The hearing may result in the driver being placed on probation and ordered to attend a driver improvement course. Driving violations vary in points. For example, for speeding 15mph over the speed limit or under is 3 points, while driving 25mph over the speed limit is 6 points.

It is important for Kentucky drivers to understand the importance of driving carefully and responsibly. When a person is a negligent driver, they risk their lives, along with the lives of everyone on the roads.

If a family finds themselves in a situation where they have been affected by a negligent driver, they may want to speak with a legal professional who is skilled in personal injury. An attorney can visit the accident scene, interview witnesses and review police reports to help determine what happened. Compensation may be available for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and other damages.

When a driver engages in negligent behavior, they should be held accountable for their mistakes. The Kentucky Driver Point System helps hold drivers responsible for their behavior.
