A car colliding with a motorcycle is a nightmare for every party involved, but it is particularly dangerous for motorcyclists. There are far fewer motorcycles than cars on the roads, and yet motorcyclists are at a much higher risk of accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that motorcyclists are five times more likely to be injured in an accident than motorists, and 30 times more likely to die in a crash.
These statistics should raise significant concern for motorcyclists and drivers alike. Fortunately, the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety created a list of important safety tips for both motorcyclists and drivers to observe on the roads.
Tips for motorcyclists
- Wear a helmet at all times
- Get proper training, education and licensing
- Always wear adequate protective gear
- Choose clothing in bright colors for maximum visibility
- Turn on headlights, even during the daytime
- Never ride under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Do not push your own level of ability
- Obey traffic laws and traffic signs
- Leave space between your motorcycle and other vehicles
Tips for drivers
- Motorcycles have the same privileges as cars, so treat them respectfully
- Allow a full lane width for motorcycles
- Know that half of all motorcycle accidents involve a car, truck, or other vehicle
- Nearly 40 percent of these crashes were caused by the vehicle turning left in front of the motorcyclist
- Motorcycles are often harder to see than other motor vehicles, and it is harder to judge their speed and distance
- Always use your turn signals
- Check your blind spots and mirrors for motorcyclists
- Be wary of motorcycles signaling a lane change or turn
- Minor road conditions can pose serious threats to motorcyclists
- Allow a greater following distance of three to four seconds for motorcycles
By following these motorcycle safety tips, you can play a crucial part in helping reduce the number of accidents involving motorcycles on Kentucky’s roads.
